Amend Nigerian Tax Laws to create a conducive environment for Local Funding of Charity and Humanitarian Interventions. Chief Ayuba Barki Gulfan.

Ogunenwa Otubi Jos..

Nigerian Polio Survivor/Ambassador, Human Rights Activist, (the Makaman Langai) and Executive Director of the Beautiful Gate Handicapped Peoples Center Jos, Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan (Esq) has called on Nigerian Lawmakers to amend the country’s Tax Laws to allow for a fraction of the taxes being collected to go to charity.

This according to him was already in practice in countries across the world where taxable individuals and entities were allowed to contribute a fraction of their taxes due directly to charity and humanitarian activities – an enabling environment he averred was created by government in those countries to guarantee the sustainability of support to those in need, apart from government donations.

Chief Gufwan made this known when he appeared on an Breakfast Show on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) ‘Rock City’ in Jos .
.
According to him, the government in Nigeria has not made enough effort to create a conducive environment for humanitarian efforts and charity to thrive outside of foreign donations and foreign aid.

Chief Burki also expressing concern that when foreign policies that support humanitarian interventions in Nigeria change, the foreign humanitarian support being enjoyed may be at risk, with very little local interventions from spirited individuals and entities.

In his own words Chief Gufwan add “Let me tell you, the biggest problem in Nigeria about funding and supporting humanitarian aid generally is that the government of Nigeria has not created the enabling environment for citizens to contribute. You see in the United States of America for example, there is a lot of stimulus that government provides if you contribute. You know there are like the government of America that has allowed American citizens to donate a certain percentage of their taxable income to charities locally or internationally.”

“So I don’t know how much is your tax. For example if your tax per annum is 100,000 or 1 million naira the government has allowed you as a citizen to donate 15% or 10% to charity, any charity of your choice. So you just donate and you submit the paper. So during tax accreditation or tax assessment the tax agency will calculate whatever you have given to charity as part of your tax and that way every american citizen if they choose to they can fund humanitarian activity.”

“We don’t do this in Nigeria so government takes our taxes 100% and they do whatever they want to do with it. So it is not helping a lot. I believe that one thing I will appeal to our lawmakers is to pass a law that allows nigerian citizens, taxable Nigerians, individuals, corporate organizations and societies to commit a certain percentage of their income to any charity of their choice. And I can tell you, if we do that, humanitarianism will blossom in Nigeria because there will be a lot of funding. A lot of people who have ideas to get involved in one humanitarian activity or the other are stalled because of the absence of funding .” he stressed.

North Central APC canvasses support from lawyers, CSOs, professional bodies for Ganduje’s ouster

Ogunenwa Audu Jos

The North Central All Progressive Congress (APC) Forum has called on professional bodies from the North Central region including Lawyers, Civil Society Organizations, Journalists, among others to join hands together in the push to oust APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.

Speaking with newsmen yesterday in Jos the Plateau State capital, the forum’s Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Mandung Zazzaga, said the position Ganduje is occupying is for the North Central region according to party arrangements, and it is someone from Nassarawa State or the region that is supposed to replace the former Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu and not Ganduje who is from the North West.

He said several votes of no confidence have been passed on Ganduje from his Kano ward as well as other litigations, of which the North Central APC forum has been in the lead.

The Chairman said all they are doing is in the interest of the North Central region, and that is why they are calling for the professional bodies from the region to join hands with them, saying they have pursued other good causes in other parties as well as those that are apolitical, which are for the betterment of the region, and not only APC causes alone.

So, he said, any where they observe that the North Central region will be relegated to the background, shortchanged or cheated, they have always risen to its defence and advanced its causes, and so all the good people of North Central, irrespective of political, professional, ethno-religious and other affliction should join hand with the forum to push for the ouster of Ganduje so that a rightful person from the region can occupy the seat.

Zazzaga who was also a member of the Presidential Campaign Council in the last election pointed out that said the hearing of suit filed against Ganduje by the forum is coming up on 30th of this May, and so all and sundry should support the forum in one way or another and in prayers also so that victory can be achieved.

He said why they have been intensifying push for the zoning of the National Chairmanship position of the party to the region is not only because that position is well deserved by the region, but also owing to its contribution to the progress of the party and its victory in 2023 elections.

Again, he said the North Central tremendous support to the emergence of President Bola Tinubu as the president was tremendous, and that the region has also delivered five governors for the APC out of the six states in the North Central region.

And so, as a ruling party which the region has helped in all ramifications, it cannot afford to fold its hand and let the position or other benefit accrued to the region to be highjacked or denied since there are many developmental things and benefits to be gotten or enjoyed from the ruling party.
