Plateau: Fund for youth employment empowers 300 Plateau youths with POS terminals, loans to boost entrepreneurship
Ogunenwa Audu Jos
Youth empowerment initiative by the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE), which is jointly sponsored by Crust Microfinance Bank, Thrive Agric and Trace Nigeria have provided POS terminals and loans to youths and women in Plateau State .
This was done in order to boost business and entrepreneurship skills among them.
The beneficiaries comprises of 300 women and youths from 10 communities and across four local government areas of the state.
The beneficiaries are also entitled to a loan of N100,000 minimum and up to N500,000 to support the business, which will also be registered and with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
Concept note of the initiative said it promotes the inclusion of women and youth, recognizing their vital role in driving employment opportunities and economic growth in Nigeria and Africa
The beneficiaries can take on roles as agro commodity agents, POS agents, and more, with a focus on skill development to thrive in agriculture and financial services.
In her remarks at a town hall meeting with the women and youths, the Project Lead, Barrister Khadija Mohammad Abdulhameed explained that the project is aimed at empowering youths and women within the ages of 18 – 35, and the project is currently being implemented in 10 communities across four local government areas of Plateau State.
“The 10 communities are Heipang, Gyel, Dadinkowa, Tudun-Wada, Dung, Gengere, Haske, Kampala, among others, and the local government areas are Jos North, Jos South, Jos East and Barkin Ladi.
“The aim of the project is to address the gender gap that exist among the women and the youth between 18 – 35 years old, which hinders them from accessing employment opportunities.
“Our partners that are sponsoring this project are companies that use innovative solutions. Like the cross Microfinance Bank offer financial services.
“They will distribute POS terminals to the beneficiaries and then register their companies with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The youths and women will pay 50% of the registration and the bank will pay the remaining 50%.
“The bank is also willing to give them loans, minimum of N100,000 – N500,000. The youths and women for this project are 300, and they are selected from across the 10 communities and four local government areas,” she said.
She adviced the beneficiaries that when they finally begin to operate the POS, they should try as much as they can to judiciously utilize the funds they received and do their business effectively.
On his part, the Assistant Team Lead of the Project, Zeenret Zamani, said the project will among other things raise abiding awareness on the need for youths and women to embrace entrepreneurship that will lead to sustainable economic development.
He called on the government to design a policy framework/document that will favor women and youth to take up entrepreneurship for their vitamins and that of the entire nation.
He pointed out that one of the implementing partners of the project which is the Thrive Agric are already changing the face of agricultural practices in the country and other African countries, and they will empower the youth of this project accordingly.
He said this is in addition to the business empowerment program which the crust microfinance bank is already undertaking in the grassroots in Plateau State, which we go a long way in empowering the woman and the youths.
In his presentation, one of the resource persons Dr. Reuel Dakung said it is important to empower the youths because statistics have shown that youths constitute about 70% of the nations population, while for women, he said that women are also very pivotal in the society and if you build a woman you build a nation.
Dr. Dakung who is also from the Department of Business Administration in University of Jos, noted therefore that the empowerment of the women as well as the youth and their blend is key to the economic development of the nation.
He said over the years, the youth and the women have been relegated to the background, that is why when one check the poverty index in the nation he discovered that the number of women and youths are on the high side, even in the rural areas.
According to him, statistics has also shown that about 120 million of the youth in the country are Elder underemployed or unemployed and that is a disaster for the nation, because that is what fuels you youth restiveness, crimes and criminality.
“So this programme is apt because it provides a strategy on how the youth can be empowered, one of which is how to train them and develop their skills and secondly is on how they can partner with organizations and we have given name a number of outlets that they can partner with, depending on your area of business.
“Another area is the issue of mentorship because in every sphere of life there people that have gone ahead, and such people are supposed to mentor the upcoming ones. And then there is the issue of how they can manage their finances which is financial inclusion, financial literacy, financial intelligence and financial discipline.
“So if our youth and women are able to kill into all of these, they will surely succeed. And with respect to Plateau State, there are different areas of business opportunities, weather in the area of agriculture, and other areas which I know of they tap into it they will become great,” he said.
*Explains rational for rejecting high court ruling seeking Ganduje’s removal Audu Jos
Ogunenwa Audu Jos
.The North Central All North Central Progressives Congress (APC) Forum, has said it will never allow Abdullahi Ganduje to cause disinfection and disunity in the party in the region because that is ultimately what he appears to be aiming at.
Speaking with newsmen in Jos the Plateau State capital on Sunday, the Chairman of the Forum, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, said they will pursue all diligent means possible to fight for the return of the National Chairmanship position of the party to the region.
Zazzaga pointed out that they will appeal last Monday’s ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja which dismissed their suit seeking the removal of Ganduje as the National Chairman of the party, saying interpretation of the 2022 constitution of the APC as amended, which outlined the zoning arrangement was neglected by the court.
Recalled that the North Central APC Forum had dragged Ganduje, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the court praying for the nullification of appointment of Ganduje as the National Chairman of the party.
The party had said the appointment is a violations of the party’s constitution 2022 as amended as well as the zoning arrangement for the party for the Chairmanship position of the party from North Central and not the North West region where Ganduje came from.
Also, the forum claimed that the appointment of Ganduje breached Article 13 of the APC Constitution because it was not done through a democratic process enshrined in the party’s law.
But in his Monday’s judgement of the suit, Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the suit on some grounds.
According to Justice Ekwo, the APC North Central Forum is not a juristic person and not registered in law, and that it has no legal power to file the suit.
Also, Ekwo said that the plaintiff failed to explore the internal mechanism for peaceful resolution of issues before rushing to the court, adding that the appointment of officers for APC by its National Executive Committee is an internal affair of the party which no court can dabble into.
But reacting to the judgement, the Chairman of the North Central APC Forum, Saleh Zazzaga, has said they will appeal the judgement, and that they will pursue their cause to a legal and logical conclusion.
“The North Central APC forum is well recognized as a support group within the party since 2018, and the evidence of the letter of recognition as a support group is there.
“Besides, we are chieftains and members of the party alike, and as individuals and groups, can’t we express our grievances if we feel that the party constitution is being fouled, can’t we seek legal redress as either individual or group? We are even more formidable than some party members and groups who have sought legal redress to contestable issues which remain unresolved.
“And on the issue which the court said we didn’t seek internal crisis resolution mechanism, we have pursued our cause through varied means but we were not paid attention. We have consulted and aired our grievances through the party stakeholders in the region, we have protested again and again and we have also done Media publications to that effect, among other things.
“So, if these and more were engaged in without result and we approached the court to seek redress, what is wrong about that, since it’s legal means that we followed? But the defendant’s argument was what the judgement almost recounted, without considering our key arguments that are facts based.
“Nevertheless we will keep pursuing our case to the end. At least, posterity will judge us fairly that we have legally and legitimately pursued a good and honest cause within the party.
“And as for Ganduje, we will not allow him to destroy the APC in the North Central region. Since we have been pursuing our demand for the region, some people for their selfish interests have been lobbied to betray the region.
“We saw some of them who rushed to Ganduje to congratulate him after the court judgment. Is it not laughable that one is celebrating a judgement against his own region for what is constitutionally arranged to be for the region?
“Our joy remains that our fight is not that of a selfish interest but for the people of the North Central region and for their democratic benefits. All we want is fairness and equity. And for all those betraying the region, we know them and we will address their betrayal accordingly in the shortest possible time,” he said.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to consider their cause, saying that Ganduje’s remaining in office will make the people of the North Central region to feel relegated to the background, and that could affect the party in the region because most stakeholders are united in the struggle.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has received praises for leading an all inclusive administration on the Plateau aimed at bringing the people together and provide them with high-quality services and effective governance.
This commendation was made by the leaders of cultural Organizations and ethnic nationalities resident in Jos when they received the Senior Special Assistant SSA to the Governor on Middle Belt Nationalities, Hon. Dan Kwada during a familiarization visits.
It would be recalled that not too long after his appointment in August this year, Kwada made clear his desire and intention to meet with the leaders of the over 100 middle Belt nationalities resident in Plateau.
Consequently , the SSA on Middle Belt nationalities commenced his tour with visits to the Secretariat of PIDAN, Berom Cultural and Educational Organization (BECO) in Bukuru Jos South, the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SUKAPU), Plateau State, the Tiv and Zhar communities, respectively.
Dan Kwada stated that the exercise was aimed at uniting the different nationalities who shared in the same struggle and to forge a common front to deal with the challenges confronting them including insecurity and land grabbing.
During the separate visits, the SSA posited that Governor Mutfwang was very passionate and concerned about the challenges confronting the Middle Belt region. “This formed the basis for the creation of this office for the very first time in the history of Plateau State.
“And the main reason is for inclusiveness and to ensure that we all speak with one voice because our issues or challenges are peculiar, most especially the challenge of insecurity and land grabbing will bridge the gap”.
At BECO Secretariat, Bukuru, where the SSA was received by the BECO President world-wide, Da Gyang Dudu and members of his Executive, the BECO President appreciated Gov Mutfwang for picking Dan Kwada for a position he described as very sensitive saying the office does more beyond what the eyes can see.
He held that the Middle Belt is not just about nationalities but a movement rooted in ideology.
The BECO President believed that identity remained the fundamental element in connecting the nationalities. “Identity becomes the very fundamental element in connecting who we are.
“Before you say Middle Belt Nationalities, there must be some form of identity and this identity is what we want to connect and see how we can fuse it together to make Nigeria a better nation for each and everyone of us”,
Dara Dudu further noted with disenchantment how the Middle Belt person has been subjected to all kinds of oppression and marginalization in all ramifications. “It is on record that some federal establishments or ministries are the exclusive right of people in other regions and not those from the Middle Belt.
“No matter the level of education, experience and exposure of a Middle Belt person, he will never be appointed to head certain positions or ministries.
“Why are we not considered or treated as part or members of this sovereignty?
“Why are the people of the Middle Belt being used for the comfort of people in other regions?, Elder Dudu asked rhetorically.
In the light of this, the BECO President commended the ingenuity of Governor Mutfwang for seeing the need to create such an office and the appointment of Dan Kwada to head it.
The SSA’s next place of visit was the SOKAPU’s temporary secretariat at Zawan Junction, where its Chairman, Professor Abraham Dogo says it was the first time a Governor would recognize the body on the Plateau; a sentiment that would be shared by all the other nationalities visited by the SSA. He pledged the total support of the SOKAPU community to the administration of Governor. Caleb Mutfwang.
At his Palace, the Ter Tiv Plateau State, Chief Peter Aper said that Governor Mutfwang has by the laudable step, proved that he intends to foster the bond of unity that the state and Nigeria at large so yearns for.
In his submission, the Chairman of Zhar Community, Plateau State, Ibrahim Yusuf also applauded the initiative by Governor Mutfwang saying that the governor has already shown that he is committed to embracing all irrespective of their differences or affiliations.
He equally promised the support of the Zhar Community in the state to the Mutfwang administration to ensure the delivery of dividends of democracy.
The SSA was accompanied by many personalities including Hon. Danjuma Azi, former Member, Jos North/West State Constituency and currently, the Secretary, Jos North PDP Chairmanship Campaign Council. The visit to other communities continues.
It would be recalled that the Middle Movement has expanded beyond the former six states of Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Niger and FCT to include; Southern Kaduna, Southern Bauchi, Southern Gombe, Southern Yobe, Southern Kebbi, Taraba and part of Adamawa.

The North Central All Progressive Congress (APC) Forum has warned Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, against what it termed his unworthy action that has been destabilizing the party and the state at large as well as his lack of respect for his political benefactor and other leaders.
Speaking with newsmen in Jos on Saturday I. Jos ,the Plateau State capital on the governor’s attitude, the forum’s Chairman, Saleh Mandung Zazzaga, said worse of all is that the governor equally failed to honour the peace initiatives organized by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the crisis in the Benue APC.
The Chairman APC North central forum said that is the height of disrespect for the president of the country who is also the leader of the APC which is the platform on which the governor won the 2023 election.
Apart from that, Zazzaga said, governor Alia has also rejected all the attempts by stakeholders of the party, including federal legislators, the paramount ruler in the state, among others.
He said for the fact that the governor from the onset began to disrespect and quarrel with his political benefactor and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, is an indication of his ungratefulness, and that is biting the fingers that fed him.
Zazzaga however set the North Central APC will not fold its hands to allow the governor continue destabilizing the party in the state which is in the North Central region, adding that if he doesn’t retrace his steps, several actions can be taken against him, which will be implemented accordingly.
“Governor Alia should remember that he did not win the governorship election on his own accord, but with the support of others. Therefore the governor need to respect the APC leaders, the President the SGF and other party stakeholders.
“If the governor does not stop his unbecoming attitude towards the leaders of the party and towards the general interest of the party, he will begin to lose his strong footing and the support he has hitherto been enjoying from all and sundry across the party, since it was the party that produced him and not him that produced the party.
“Alia’a attitude is beginning to show that of outside interference, and even if it’s the enemy of the party or opposition that has been instigating him, he should restrict his steps otherwise the party can always look for his replacement.
“And should he want to join any party of forces that are instigating him against the APC, then he is free to leave and join them, rather than staying in the party and be causing problem. So far, the party is progressively getting together and thinking ahead, including supporting the policies of Mr President, which though momentarily painful, yet it is at the long run for the benefit of the nation.
“Also, among all the North central governors of the APC, it is only the Benue State governor that is already doing things contrary and inimical to the interest of the party, and this will not be allowed. So he is strongly advised to retrace his steps now, ” he said.
Maiduguri dam collapse represents failure in governance – RDI
Ogunenwa Otubi Jos.
The Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI) has linked the collapse of the Alau Dam in Borno and inundation of farmlands and hundreds of homes in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital to a total disconnect among the coordinating emergency response agencies of government at federal and state levels.
RDI position contained in a statement issued in Lagos, comes on the heels of the collapse of the dam yesterday (Tuesday 10 September) and inundation of 70 percent of Maiduguri. The flooding of the communities was said to have begun about a week ago but reached its peak in the early hours of Tuesday, displacing residents of Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, Bulabulin, and other communities.
In the aftermath of the incident thousands of homes have been submerged, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno and government facilities in the capital. There has also been a jail break and escape of animals in the Museum Park, further endangering hapless residents. Reports indicate that 80 per cent of animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park zoo died as a result of the incident.
In a statement issued in Lagos and made available to Kwararafa Reporters, RDI said the collapse of the dam was completely avoidable adding that the incident represents failure in governance at all levels since the floods had hitherto been predicted by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) yet no concrete preemptively actions or flood management plan was put in place to safeguard life and property.
Executive Director of RDI, Philip Jakpor said,” Maiduguri may just be the starting point. We had warned severally that the lack lustre approach of the federal and the state governments that have collected about N40 billion in Ecological Funds this year alone to addressing perennial floods would lead to avoidable catastrophic incidents like this. Perhaps the attention that has attended this case is only because Maiduguri the state capital is involved. If it had been in the remote communities there would be less alarm. This is completely damning for the government”
Jakpor maintained that a dam does not just collapse in a day without notice.
“With the intense rains a proactive management would have known that waters must be released gradually from the dam to avoid a breach. But in this case, the waters had reached the crescendo before the management of the dam raised the alarm”
The RDI boss pointed out that someone or some people must be held to account for the failure in acting to prevent the collapse of the dam and the monumental losses that the state has recorded and would incur in the days ahead.
He pointed out that Nigerians are yet to see effective and proactive coordination between the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and their state counterparts in response to flooding incidents.
“Unfortunately what we only read is how the emergency management agencies struggle to share palliatives when such disasters would have been prevented in the first place”.
He urged other states of the federation to take a cue from the incident and take proactive measures to avoid similar happening, going further to alert that noting that in the Niger Delta region for instance monster floods are predicted to happen.
“The Alau Dam collapse is a tragedy that could have been avoided. Until we take preemptive measures to address the fallouts of climate change we will only continue suffering economic losses and needless loss of lives”, Jakpor stated.

Hassan also alleged that at the Lagos state University, the management of the university dismissed the Officials of the local chapter of the union in 2017 and 2019 simply because they insisted the state university admission should respect the rule of law , including unlawfully elevation of the vice chancellor to the rank of Professor in 2019.
According to Hassan, the two scenarios, the University of both KSU and LASU have refused to reinstate the affected staffs despite the various investigate panel reports that absolved them of any offence or infraction.
