AT LAST, THE REBUILING OF THE JOS MAIN MARKET: BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.BY JONATHAN ISHAKU.

There was an uplifting news item a couple of weeks ago in Plateau State; quite a refreshing change from the constant stream of bad news about killings and skyrocketing prices of foodstuffs.

It was the cheering news that the state government has at last found a financier to partner in the rebuilding of the burnt Jos Main Market which for the past 20 years lay in ruins at the city centre. Although it could hardly compensate for lost lives or deepening economic gloom families face these days, it was a reassuring news item, nevertheless, given the vast potentials the market has in revitalizing the economy of the state as well as the vast opportunities it holds for individual commercial activities. The burnt Jos Main Market held a special place in the soul of Plateau State and its people. It was initially conceived, like most iconic projects in the state, by the former Governor of the defunct Benue Plateau State, Mr. Joseph D. Gomwalk, in 1975. Gomwalk was toppled in the coup of the same year, so the project went through many hands. But like it is often said, if Gomwalk was the Moses of Plateau State, Chief Solomon D. Lar was the Joshua, an allusion to the Biblical characters God used in the liberation of the Jews from Egypt and final arrival in the Promised Land! Indeed, Chief Lar was instrumental to the completion of the market as he injected a massive part of the socalled Midland Bank foreign loan he had procured into it. By the time he, too, was overthrown in the General Muhammadu Buhari coup of January 1984, the magnificent edifice was almost completed. It was the military Governor Navy Commodore Samuel B. Atukum’s special honour to invite Gen. Buhari, then Head of State, to Plateau State to commission the market in 1985.By the time it was commissioned, the market stood out as the biggest indoor market in West Africa. But there was more to it than sheer size; it was aesthetically resplendent, a sheer architectural splendor! Almost immediately, it became a tourism delight in its own right, attracting a daily retinue of tourists from near and far who visited the market to just behold the architectural masterpiece. No students’ educational visit to Jos was complete without including the market in the itinerary. The market had the capacity to accommodate at least 3,500 traders in the lock-up shops while the open space at the base of the main structure could accommodate at least another 2,000 traders. The complex also had provision for banks, restaurants, police station, fire service station, car parks and even accommodation for some important market staff. The market was well patronized by traders from all over Nigeria. It was a veritable internally generated revenue (IGR) spinner for the government. However, all these went up in flames one night in February 2002. It was described as mysterious fire but public perception was that it was an act of arson by unknown hoodlums. The government of Chief Joshua Dariye set up a commission of inquiry but the report was never released. For the past 20 years successive governments had promised to rebuild the edifice but they all failed to so. In fact, during the brief administration of Chief Michael Botmang, the beautiful yellow metal frames adorning the complex were removed and allegedly sold by a top aide! In 2009, Governor Jonah D. Jang promised to demolish the entire structure and build a modern international shopping mall in its place. But aside demolishing the imposing sculpture of the baby-carrying woman with load on her head popularly called “Mama Tapgun” (named after Governor Fidelis Tapgun who made the addition), this promise, too, was not fulfilled. However, Governor Simon B. Lalong back in February 2015, even before he contested the election, told a newspaper in an interview that “one of the first things he would do was to rebuild the market either through build-operate-and transfer model or public-private partnership.” Yet it remained an unfulfilled promise during his first tenure in government even after the fanfare of demolishing a section of the market preparatory to the commencement of constructing the market.

The political opposition made heavy weather of this during his reelection electioneering campaigns, widely circulating the Lalong demolition video as evidence of failed promises. As the years fly by, with the second tenure inching to an end, the video was also a subject of political jest at watering-holesSo it was pleasant news, indeed, when the Lalong government announced arrangements for the commencement of the project with Jaiz Bank Plc in a public-private partnership (PPP) . It said under the agreement signed by the partners, the bank will fully finance the N9.4bn project at zero per cent interest. Jaiz Bank is Nigeria’s first non-interest bank operating under Islamic banking principles. Although it was founded in 2003, the bank began operation as a national bank in Nigeria only in January 2012. Naturally, owing to the sentiments religion packs in this country, already voices have started shouting “Islamization!” since the announcement was made. I respect our defenders of constitutional secularism but this can hardly be a threat in any way. The cynicism, however, is borne out of public ignorance about the operation of the Islamic banking principles of non-interest, a concept which other Western mainstream banks such as HSBC, Citibank, Barlays Bank, Standard Chartered, etc, have since incorporated non-interest banking products into their operations. Proponents of this system say that it is an alternative banking based on the principle of non-interest, sharing of risks and rewards, equity, fairness and justice. In short, it is an ethical financial system without recourse to Islamic propaganda or proselytism. The major point of departure with the traditional capitalist banking system as practiced in Nigeria is the rejection of usury (riba). In truth, this principle is shared by both Christianity and Judaism. The Bible is emphatically against usury (Exodus 22:25-27, Deuteronomy 23:19 Ezekiel 18:8) as practiced by the mainstream banks which have virtually strangulated Nigerians or rendered them enslaved through exorbitant interest charges. Christianity is very much in tune with non-interest banking principles. In fact, Jesus’ only recorded expression of anger was the chasing out of usurers who had converted the temple, God’s house, into their place of operation (John 2:15). If Jaiz Bank will rebuild the burnt Jos Main Market and thus resuscitate the economy of Plateau State, so be it. Governor Lalong should be saluted for keeping his word to rebuild the market. Although, it may be coming late in the life of his Administration, and I am sure there is a convincing reason for that, the most important thing is that the process is now under way. His choice of a partner for the PPP is also a sound one. Within the short period of its operation in Nigeria, Jaiz Bank has established a reputation of reliability. The first Islamic bank anywhere in the world to break even within the first three years of its operation, the bank has also just within 10 years of operation been able to move its asset base from N12 billion to N278 billion and, finally, to earn an overall Fitch rating of B- just under a decade. Besides, Jaiz Bank Plc has a tract record in such project financing. A few examples will suffice: in a tripartite partnership between the Kano State government and private investors, the bank is constructing a multi-million world-class drug-only wholesale market, the first of its type in Nigeria, at the Kano Economic City; in Niger State, in partnership with the government, the bank is developing 3 hectares in the Minna City Centre to provide for a shopping complex, modern underground parks, modern filling station, warehouses, corner shops, restaurants and a recreational a centre at a total cost of N3.5 billion; Kaduna State also engaged it in its market development and currently Enugu State government is reported in talks with it for a similar project! The above performance profile and experience in the sector are good assurances of the bank’s capacity to handle the Jos market project. My only advice, as I initially expressed on the social media, is that the memorandum of understanding (MOU) should be doubly scrutinized to guarantee equity, fairness and justice to the people of Plateau State as well as ensure hitch-free implementation of the partnership.

Attai Audu Jos.

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Director, Chief Jonathan Sunday Akuns has declared Interest to Contest the 2023 governorship race in Plateau State.

. Chief Akuns in an interview with newsmen said he has what it takes to turn around the economic fortunes of the people of plateau state within a short period of time if he is voted governor of the state .

Chief Akuns a one time Special Adviser to Senator Joshua Dariye former Governor of Plateau State between 2003-2005, said he has been on the Plateau political space at the grassroots for some time now and as a result, understands the unique nature of the state problems and how to tackle it for the benefit of all and sundry on the Plateau.

Chief Akun added that he is out to tackle the insecurity challenges of the state, and as well promise to create incentive frameworks which would deliver happiness to the people of the state.

According to him, creating such incentive framework , would supress the desire for violence among the people on the Plateau since they will be meaningfully engaged, busy, happy and prosperous to a level that they will not want to involve themselves in any form of violence.

On what sort of incentive framework would he create, he explained that he would not let it out yet as some aspirants’ are fond of copying peoples manifestoes, especially from experts/technocrats like them, and then make it look as if it is originally their concept.

He however said he would reveal all his plans accordingly and in due time, adding that he and his team are working round the clock to enter the contest with burning desire to advance the state to an enviable height because it has all it takes to be a very prosperous state in the country.

Akuns further noted that the state is blessed with natural and beautiful sites and fantastic weather, but that hunger and poverty is not making it possible for the full exploitation of all the tourism and social potentials which abounds on the Plateau.

He said Tyoden is reliable in all sense of the word and can be trusted with leadership of the state if given the opportunity in 2023.

Tyoden: Reinforcing the Unmistakable.

By Nash Vongdip

The Heavens themselves, they say, blaze forth the birth of princes. It is the meeting of divinity and providence that Professor Soni Gwande Tyoden, is making himself available to serve the state and is coming with all uncommon trajectory, an expansive and extensive pedigree, and an unsurpassed mileage in public affairs and administration. Like some troubadour, he has traversed issues, challenges, tests, assignments, innovations and all; and earned the virtues of trust, experience, confidence and the fundamentals of leadership. As an aspirant to the governorship of Plateau State come 2023, he is certainty standing tall; and is favoured by time and circumstance; and remains the candidate to beat in any fair electoral contest. As a deputy governor, the administration drew and derived invaluable credibility from his hard-earned integrity and public esteem and candour. He is reputed to having served diligently and provided the gauge and stabilizing factor of the administration. As chairman of the transition committee in 2015, his report set the perspective and compass that gave philosophical foundation to the APC government’s outlook and development paradigm. It is simply to state obvious by noting that the Professor’s gubernatorial ambition is practically a further expression of the ideals contained in that 2015 transition committee report; and of course a window to do move in consonance of emergent and emerging challenges in global economics, politics, diplomacy, and development collaborations. The inauguration of this campaign organization and council is a foreword to an era of development and transformation. It is also a preface to a period of grace and fulfillment as the age-long aspirations of the people will receive expression in relevant and corresponding government programmes and people – based governance. All that is the difference between that dawn and now is that the Plateau people must do seed sowing by enlisting massively and popularly in this TRUST PROJECT. The time is now and the deadline is 2023. It is a call to serve and a call to all of us to rise to the truth and work to change our state for the better. “The World outside is moving and we must move with it. This is our chance”.

Iam A Patriot and A Philanthropist- Langtang South LGA Chairman Vincent Venman.

The name Prince Vincent Venman Bulus alias Money in the boot, may be famous in many virtuous acts and motives but most profoundly, a byword for philanthropy, social Justice and democratic activism. Blessed with a set of weak and colorless political foes, the young Executive Chairman of Langtang South LGC, waxes and wanes without any ramifications.

The wealthy young man’s socialist and philanthropic instincts is simply out of this world. No wonder, he enjoys a popularity that is unique to him. But just like any other human endeavor, his stay in the murky waters of Plateau politics, hasn’t been without incidences. In this chat with Jos Correspondent of Kwararafa Reporters, Comfort Billa Philemon took time to drive us through the interesting details of the unmanageable sojourn.

Interview Excerpt:

Q Kwararafa Reporters : You are one political leader that foes imagine as embattled on many fronts. Is there any chance that your regime is plagued with such inadequacies?

Ans Prince: That will entirely depend on their characterization of a predicament. For me, I’m a simple person, destined to espouse the politics of generosity, care and standing up for the oppressed. I’m verifiably passionate about putting smiles on the faces of my people and of course, fellow Nigerians. I try in my own little way to attend to my peoples’ financial and material needs, as personal, urgent and uncompromising as possible.

As an elected Chairman, I have prioritized the security, peace, dignity and economy of my people. God’s own mercy has been sufficient, since I resumed as the elected LGC Chairman and Chief Security officer, The LGA hasn’t recorded any of such horrendous internal or invading foreign criminal gangs. I create and sustain level playing field for all to pursue their goals, without let or hindrance. My joy, to the glory of God, is that so far, my people sleep with their eyes closed. The LGC revenue net has been greatly widen and collection is at the verge of digitalization. Resources are now dully accounted for, and focal facilities like the Health and Education sub sectors are running optimally. These I do without apology or fear. May be these are the kind of commitments, integrity and passion I have brought to the table, that failed and warped minded politicians like them adjudged as an embattlement. Considering the anxious moments, there’s some neglected facts of life that, we must begin to take serious now. One is, eventful leadership has little or nothing to do with your Paper credentials. And the other, that Resources can never be scarce but Resourceful leaders. Daily Agenda: Walk us through the temper issues your opponents say you have.Prince: To start with, I don’t have issues with regulating my emotions and, I take exception to their wayward insensitivity.

The issue is that desperate politicians have been allowed to elevate ruse and hypocrisy to a level of culture. These type of politicians have made Moral values like Truth, hard work and honesty look like weakness, and waste of time. I fear for the youths. This is the exact tactics some of their parents used and squandered our parents’ generation. And their children are at it again! They are using the same tactics to squander our own generation and those of our children, this is not fair. I urge Taroh youths to weak up from their terrible slumber. Tarohland is in shambles.

Q : Where do you place the 74th Resettlement Day episode? . It was one single incident that rightly sparked all the bad publicity.

Ans : Thank God you brought this up. Like I have said severally, the incident was as avoidable as it was a premeditated. That Hon. Ubandoma’s show was just desperate decoy to disrupt the Resettlement Day celebrations, but luckily, they didn’t succeed. And to tell you how successful the Day was, first our target was to raise N15m but we ended up with over N28m and counting. This is largely unprecedented and, if you allow me, it is an endorsement of my person, popularity, focused and progressive leadership. For the records, this was how the regrettable skirmishes started. An extended convoy of vehicles with unruly mob arrived the venue with the most disruptive and insultive language of the century. The toxins, chanting songs more of war than celebration, refused to calm down. Shortly, Hon.Ubanduma Laven emerged from one of the tinted Toyota Hiluxes and headed to the VIP stand. While there, he wanted to take the seat of the Executive Chairman of Langtang North LGC and, I sow how the protocol officials unsuccessfully tried to manage the situation. As the Chairman and Chief Security Officer, I only wanted to nib the situation, but alas, the next thing Ubanduma did was to snatch the Microphone from the MC and started chanting their Party’s name and slogan PDP, PDP-Power to the people. Suddenly the whole place went agog, guns stated blaring. And as a carefully scripted plan, Hon. Beni and Rtd. AVM Bali, quickly left the venue and never looked back. Shortly, Ubanduma also left with his hoodlums. While this confusion was raging, prerecorded messages and baseless videos had already gone virile on the social Media networks. For God sake, is this how elected officials are supposed to conduct themselves? So, it was just a desperate situation which requires a desperate solution. It took us time to restore normalcy. And let me use this opportunity to correct an impression; we Tarohs are only courageous and honest not unruly and desperate people. Those who are trying to forcefully replace these inate values their vile political narratives, owe it a duty to our founding fathers to stop. Politics and generations will come and go but Taroh land remains.

Q Where you wrestled to the ground and beaten by these PDP hoodlums?

Ans : Never. Can you imagine, one of the sensational recordings even speculates that in that confusion, one of the Taroh masquerades crashed into a tree and was revived at a hospital, trying to flee the troubled venue? There wasn’t anything of such.

Q Daily : What steps are you taking to resolve or forestall a re-occurrence, as the Taroh nation is billed to celebrate their day in May 2022?

Ans : Strong efforts are in the works to brief critical leadership structures like the joint Taroh Traditional Council and the Ngwan Ishi O’taroh –N.I.O. I’m particularly encouraged by the integrity and energy the current officials of N.I.O have brought to bear to our collective desire to remain united and caring for one another. I will be expecting to hear their roadmap on how to restor the Taroh lost glory and stoping us from leaving in the past glory of our former leaders. The Ponzhi Taroh stool remains a big challenge but I recognize the great efforts the entire members of the Taroh Joint Traditional Council are doing to fill the void. My thanks go to the HRH, the Ponzhi Zinni and Deputy chairman Taroh Joint Traditional Council. Hon.Nimnan L

Q.: One of the reasons rumor mills adduce for PDP not seeing eye to eye with you, has to do with the 2023 elections. Is there any interest of yours that threatens theirs?

Ans: Don’t mind them, is just their politics of bitterness greed and intolerance that is hunting them! The saying, Power comes from God is real and incontestable. For God to have created us as fallible as we are, it means that no single person owes us a holistic solution to our problems and needs. It is the lack of humility and appreciation that has brought to this desperation and irresponsible desire to remain in political offices forever. Let me tell you, in this highly Enlightened and smarty generation of the most competent Taroh Sons and Daughters, no single idea or approach is the best or indispensable. Thus,10 years of the same idea or approach is certainly forever, let alone 16 for God sake! I’m for change and no one has the muscle to intimidate me or my party, APC out of it. I haven’t offended or insulted anyone for aspiring towards a credible change in the Langtang north/Langtang South Fed. House of Representatives 2023 elections.

Q : Apart from attending to the personal economy of your deprived people, which other major focus do you have?

Ans . : My major and irrevocable motivation in joining politics and of course contesting for elective offices, is to put genuine smiles on the beautiful faces of my people! As a practical public-spirited person, I’m set to lift my people out of their grinding poverty and squalor. This I will be accomplished through the empowering of Youths and Women. We will fund Langtang South economy to the place of plenty and independence. Basic Infrastructures like water and roads are key to our revolutional agenda. I promise to bring prosperity and security to the doorstep of all citizens of Langtang South LGA.

Q : What’s your advice to Taroh Youths.

Ans : The Taroh youths are unique and competitive in any sense. The hope and pride of Tarohland. They have distinguished themselves in many ways, the only problem is the system they met on ground that we are trying to change for the betterment of all.

AUPCTRE urges FG to end Cases of Banditry, Kidnapping and All other Cases of insecurity in Nigeria .

Attai Audu Jos

The Amalgamated Union of Public Cooperations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) on Thursday called on the Federal Government to bring to an end the spate of kidnapping, banditry,  armed robbery  and other forms insecurity in the country.

Mr Benjamin Anthony,  National President of the Union, made the call at the opening of its Quqdrienniel National Delegates Conference on Thursday in Jos.

According to the him, insecurity in the country has assumed an alarming dimension,  adding that the scourge is still a major challenge to peaceful and harmonious existence among the populace.

“The state of insecurity  has become so high  that violent robberies no longer catch the headlines.

“Despite all efforts put in place to defeat boko haram, the continuous attack on innocent civilians and ambush on our military still remains a challenge

“The unfortunate and avoidable  endless bloodbath in some parts of Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kaduna, Katsina and Niger states is worrisome

“Kidnnapers have taken over our roads creating serious fears on minds of the masses especially travelers by road.

“So, government has a duty to deal firmly and decisively  with these challenges and restore normalcy to all parts of this country,”he said.

Anthony, however,  called on Nigerians to be security conscious and support goverment  and security agencies in addressing the myriad of security challenges facing the nation.

On the 2023 general elections, the national president urged workers and indeed Nigerians to elect credible leaders into public offices.

He also called on the youths to shun thuggery and other electoral malpractices that would throw the nation into serious chaos.
The Deputy Governor of Plateau state Proffessor Sonnie Tyoden declared the conference open with a charge to the delegates to explore the hospitality of the good of the state while in Jos for their conference.

The conference had a theme “Building a New Nigeria -The Role of the Working Class in Advancing Decent Work Agenda and National Transformation in the Era of New Normal.
