Tribute to a Legal Luminary and Mentor: Justice Chrysanthus Senlong: A Life of Integrity, Dedication, and Impact

By Senator Simon Bako Lalong, CON, KSGG

The news of the passing of Justice Chrysanthus Senlong has left me deeply saddened and shattered. Today, I join many others in mourning a man who was not only a distinguished jurist but also an exemplary mentor, friend, and confidant.

My connection with the late Legal Luminary started many decades ago after my secondary school. As a young man, I would watch Justice Senlong, then practicing as a lawyer argue cases at the Shendam Magistrate Court, Plateau State with brilliance. His eloquence, composure, and profound understanding of the law left an indelible mark on me. It was this early inspiration that sparked my interest in the legal profession as I made up my mind to one day adorn the wig and gown and argue cases like him. Little did I know that this childhood admiration would lead to a lifelong relationship that shaped my journey in unimaginable ways.

This seed sown by Senlong grew and after my secondary school, I sought to study my course of choice, Law at the University of Jos, but was offered something else which I declined. I kept my dream alive by seeking a place at the Law Faculty, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and was successful. After completing my law studies at ABU, and the Nigerian Law School in Lagos, I was privileged to begin my legal practice under the tutelage of Justice Senlong who then as a practicing lawyer provided a grooming hub for young lawyers and students on chamber attachement or national youth service.

Justice Senlong worked closely with Mrs. Theresa Obot as head of chambers with other lawyers such as Victor Fomwul, Okey Akobundu, myself and others. At the time, he was one of the few indigenous Plateau lawyers, a principled and brilliant advocate whose mastery of the law was second to none. Many of us looked up to him and thought he would be one of the first Senior Advocates from Plateau State. He set high standards of professionalism and ethics that I have carried with me throughout my career.

Although Justice Senlong’s decision to leave the Bar for the Bench was characteristic of his commitment to justice, many of us had mixed feelings because of the mentorship we enjoyed under him and the fact that he was becoming a household name in legal practice in the State and nation at large. As a Federal High Court judge, he upheld the highest standards of judicial integrity. Even when faced with accusations of corruption that led to his unjust dismissal, he demonstrated unwavering faith in the justice system by challenging his dismissal all the way to the Supreme Court. After a decade-long battle, he was vindicated and his name was cleared. However, the emotional toll of the experience and the loss of professional time led him to opt for retirement. Despite this setback, Justice Senlong’s commitment to the public good did not waver.

His tenure as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Plateau State was also remarkable as he deployed his wealth of experience to bare in service of the people. He was instrumental to acquiring office and residential accommodation for staff of the Ministry of Justice among other initiatives he undertook.

When I became Governor of Plateau State, I sought his invaluable expertise and experience by appointing him Chairman of the Jos International Breweries, a company he knew too well, having served as its lawyer for many years. He worked assiduously with the Board in resuscitating the company and was at the verge of a breakthrough until the Endsars protests looted and destroyed a lot of the equipment on ground. Justice Senlong’s vast knowledge of the JIB also assisted us to reacquire its sister company, the BARC Farms which was earlier sold.

When we established the Plateau State Multi-Door Courthouse, there was no better person to lead the Courthouse than Justice Senlong who apart from being a lawyer and Judge, had taken courses in alternative dispute resolution at home and abroad. His contributions to these institutions were monumental. He also led the team that reviewed and updated many of Plateau State’s obsolete laws, leaving a legacy that will benefit generations to come.

The late Justice Senlong was never lazy and could not be idle at any time. He had taken into farming and was doing well producing large quantities of rice, yams and other crops. Sadly, he was billed to leave for his farm to supervise workers before death came calling.

Justice Senlong was also a teacher at heart. As a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Jos, he mentored countless young lawyers who have gone on to excel in the judiciary and other sectors. His wisdom, humility, and passion for nurturing talent were unmatched.

On a personal level, Justice Senlong was my trusted confidant and unofficial legal adviser. His insights and counsel were invaluable, and I always knew I could rely on his wise judgment. Our last meeting, though brief, was a testament to his character of humility, friendship, appreciation and commitment. Even when I missed him during my visit to his village in September during the Local Government Elections, he went out of his way to travel all the way to my village at Ajikamai, Shendam the following day to see me. We spent quality time together discussing many issues of mutual interest.

Justice Chrysanthus Senlong was a pillar of strength and an embodiment of resilience and excellence. His impact on my life and on many others cannot be overstated. He was a mentor, a guide, and a friend whose legacy will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.

May his gentle soul find eternal rest, and may his family find solace in the knowledge that he lived a life of purpose, integrity, and profound influence.

Adieu, my mentor and friend. You will be greatly missed.

Plateau : CSOs task Nentawe on performance, carefulness as minister designate for Humanitarian Affairs.

.

Ogunenwa Audu Jos.

Following the recent appointment of Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, as Minister designate for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, the Plateau State Civil Society Organizations Forum, has called upon him to ensure maximum performance on his assignment.

In a statement signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Rev. Christopher Damcher, and the Secretary, Dr. Mrs. Piwuna, respectively and made available to Kwararafa Reporters ,the forum said the ministerial seat Nentawe is about to occupy is a strategic but hot seat that requires every carefulness.

The statement said that for the fact that the two immediate past (previous) occupants of that position still have lingering fraud cases against them, is a pointer to the fact that Nentawe should apply technical knowledge, carefulness, and other qualities needed in manning that office, as well as tackling the rot in the ministry.

Nonetheless, the forum urged him not to loose focus in tackling the humanitarian needs of the people and engineering the poverty reduction rate as his office specified, as well as his home state of Plateau where there is equally abundant humanitarian needs and high poverty rate

“As a forum representing civil society organizations across various sectors working in Plateau State, we extend our solidarity and heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda on his appointment as Minister of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

“Though appointments may not typically warrant congratulations, the unique circumstances of Plateau State, which has witnessed the plight of many displaced persons without adequate attention at various levels of governance, necessitate this special recognition We believe, therefore, that this appointment brings hope for the citizens, especially those affected by displacement and its repercussions on their well-being and dignity,

“Dr. Nentawe has consistently demonstrated competence, compassion for the less privileged, and a commitment to the development of Plateau State and Nigeria at large through previous assignments.

“As an umbrella body comprising civil society organizations representing sectors like health, governance, democracy, human rights, youth, women, child protection, humanitarian services, peace and security, media for peace, and more, we express our gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this strategic and thoughtful appointment.

“We are hopeful that this cabinet reshuffle will help deliver on government promises, addressing critical issues such as poverty, hunger, and rising crime rates, and will ultimately foster better days across the country,” the statement partly read.

The statement further pointed out that the forum is assured that Plateau State has been chosen for such a pivotal ministry, given the many challenges the state is also faced with, especially in humanitarian grounds and efforts.

Meanwhile, it noted that their colleagues in the field have often been limited in their work due to inadequate funding and lack of governmental support, despite the pressing needs of displaced citizens, particularly women and children, who continue to live in dehumanising conditions.

Hence, while the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has previously been marred by allegations of corruption, we trust that Dr. Nentawe’s track record of diligence and integrity will steer the ministry away from such challenges and urge him to exercise wisdom in his leadership and avoid the pitfalls of corruption or potential blackmail that may arise.

“Dr. Nentawe has the capability to ensure that his legacy is not just one of personal achievements but of meaningful transformation for the people. We hope to witness true poverty reduction, not just in numbers but in the lived realities of Nigerians, and we look forward to hearing testimonies from those who have been positively impacted by his work,” the statement added

APC Chairmanship tussle: North Central APC suspends Ganduje’s resignation demand as NEC meets.

Ogunenwa Audu Jos .

The North Central APC Forum has expressed it’s willingness to Suspends it’s agitation for Abdulahi Ganduje’s removal as the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), as the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is planning to meet soon.

It would be recalled that the forum has been opposed to the appointment of Ganduje from onset, arguing that the position is for the North Central according to the party constitution of 2022 as amended.

To that effect, it would recalled that the North Central APC Forum had been engaged in several agitations for Ganduje’s removal like protests, press conference, consultations, letters, including also dragging him to a Federal High Court in Abuja praying for the nullification of his appointment as the National Chairman of the party.

In a statement on Wednesday made available to newsmen on their plan to put their agitation on hold, the Chairman of the North Central APC Forum, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, said they are not opposed to Ganduje as a person, but that all they have been pursuing is the rights, privileges and democratic dividends of the region.

The Chairman explained that some peace and reconciliatory initiatives are also been made, and that they will obliged as their overall intension is still for the progress of the party, the leadership as well as well as the NEC.

“It has been seven years since the formation of this great North Central APC Forum. Seven years of formidable struggle and agitation in defense of our geo-political zone. We have indeed led struggles for the political balance of our region and the Almighty Allah is gracious to us as a people.

“You may recall that, when the former National Chairman of our Party, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu resigned his position in 2023, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was elected by the National Executive Committee, NEC as his replacement.

“Immediately after the announcement, we stood in defense of our region, insisted that, Abdullahi Adamu’s successor should have come from the North Central geo-political zone in line with the party’s constitution. We addressed a Press conferences, organized protests and instituted lawsuit against the national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje at a Federal High Court Abuja.

“It was a long judicial battle that we believe was going to be victorious, unfortunately, the court decided the case against us. We were committed, dogged and resilient in pressing on. Still we give glory to Allah for he knows all things.

“Let it be on record that we do not have personal issue against the person of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, he is our national chairman.

“Our activism is based on our feelings that the national chairman should have been retained in the north central zone after the exit of Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

“We have come to agreement that the NEC has all the powers to make decisions for our party including the zoning and elections into vacant positions of our party. We understand that it was NEC that elected Ganduje. More importantly is the fact that, another NEC is by the corner where further decisions will made to the advantage of party as we prepare towards 2027 general elections.

We at the North Central APC Forum have unanimously agreed to step down our agitation pending the decision of uthe National Executive Committee of our party.

“This is inline with our principle of fairness, equity and justice in order not to cause unnecessary disaffection among political leaders from the North Central zone and other leaders of our party.

“We also believed that, by standing down at this time shall give the North Central geo-political zone the fair hearing at the NEC where our political leaders will have free hands to negotiate with the centre, some specific benefits which should be attracted to the zone,” he said.

He thanked all their teaming supporters from the region who kept the struggle alive, and promise not to disappoint them as they continue to work together to the advantage of the party.

Also, he called on all Nigerians to continue to keep faith with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as all his reforms which are geared towards a better tomorrow.

Equity International Initiative Calls For Peaceful LG Polls On the Plateau

Ogunenwa Audu Jos .

Towards Peaceful Plateau State Local Government Elections scheduled for October 9, 2024, Equity International Initiative, a civil society organization dedicated for the promotion of democracy and human rights, has  called for a credible and transparent electoral process on the Plateau..

Speaking at a Press Conference  in Jos, the organization’s Team Lead, Amb. Chris Iyama, has called voters to engage actively in the electoral process and equally  called on  the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) to facilitate a smooth election devoid of intimidation, violence, or manipulation.

Iyama underscored the necessity of fairness in the electoral process, highlighting the critical roles of various stakeholders.

“We call on PLASIEC to be diligent in the deployment of materials and ensure that every voter has unhindered access to the polls,” .

Our democracy depends on the integrity of this process, and we urge all political parties and candidates to respect the rules in place and avoid any actions that could compromise the election’s credibility.” He said.

He expressed concerns on  potential voter inducement, vote-buying, and the threats of violence on election day.

Iyama added that Equity International Initiative will deploy both stationary and roving observers to monitor the election across all 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“We will have trained observers stationed at various polling units, while roving observers will monitor the collation of results at ward levels. This approach will allow us to compile a detailed report after the election, highlighting areas for improvement in the electoral process,” he noted.

PLASIEC CHAIRMAN CISHAK

In addition to monitoring, the organization, he  called on security personnel assigned to oversee the election to uphold neutrality and professionalism.

Iyama also invited other civil society organizations to assist in ensuring a peaceful and credible election.

“Security personnel must act in accordance with their code of conduct and ensure that any attempt to interfere with the electoral process is swiftly addressed. Their role is to protect voters and the integrity of the elections”.

“We believe that collaboration among civil society groups is key to strengthening democracy. We are committed to working alongside others to ensure that this election sets a standard for fairness and transparency,” he added.

Iyama particularly encouraged young voters to participate in large numbers. “We urge the youth to come out en masse and ensure their votes count. Your participation is crucial for the future of our democracy. Together, we can safeguard the integrity of this election,” he stressed.

Similarly, Dr. Chris Kwaja, the Nigeria Country Director of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), emphasized on  the pivotal role local government elections play in Nigeria’s political landscape.

He noted, “In 2019, USIP launched a major report assessing the risks of election violence, and one of the key findings was that unresolved local conflicts often manifest in these elections.”
.
He further explained that, “When local government elections are not credible, people wait for the general elections to seek revenge. This is why it is crucial for PLASIEC to ensure a fair, transparent election process at the grassroots level.”

Dr. Kwaja also commended PLASIEC’s initiatives to foster an open and transparent electoral process, including the establishment of a Situation Room for monitoring election activities. “I told the PLASIEC chairman that his integrity is on the line.

“This election is a chance for PLASIEC to demonstrate credibility or risk returning to the negative perceptions of the past. The media and civil society will be instrumental in observing and validating the transparency of this process,” he remarked.

He further underscored the necessity for civil society to remain vigilant, warning that a compromised civil society could undermine the election’s credibility on the Plateau.

APC National chairman ship tussle: APC chieftain gives Ganduje 7 days ultimatum to resign..

.

Ogunenwa Audu Jos

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, has formally written to the embattled National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje, asking him to resign within 7 days.

Zazzaga who is the Chairman of North Central APC Forum and also served as a Member, Stakeholder Relations of Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council addressed newsmen on Tuesday in Jos the Plateau State capital.

He explained that the letter explicitly outlined the reason he is asking Ganduje to resign, and that the 7 days ultimatum expires next week Monday, upon which he will take legal action as necessary.

He revealed that at the National Convention of the party held on the 26th March, 2022, the National Chairmanship of the party was zoned to the North Central Geopolitical Zone of the country, but that Ganduje is from the North West region.

The party chieftain pointed out therefore that Ganduje’s occupation of the position is in violation of Article 31.5 (i) and (iv) of the APC Constitution 2022 (as amended), and also contrary to the ratified zoning arrangement of the party which zoned the National Chairmanship position to the North Central Geopolitical zone and particularly to Nasarawa State.

He said the letter will be on record that they have been applying divers means to resolve the matter amicably, and have used several internal crises resolving mechanism and communications, but Ganduje is hellbent on occupying the position which is constitutionally for the North Central.

The letter read: “I am a member and stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) (hereinafter referred to as “the party”) having been registered since 2016. Being an active and committed member of our great party, I was appointed and served as Member, Stakeholder Relations Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council on the 11th day of December, 2022, which function I earnestly performed leading to the election of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Alh. Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and his Vice President.

“Please recall that following the build up to the National Convention of the party held on the 26th March, 2022, wherein the National Chairmanship of the party was zoned to the North Central Geopolitical Zone of the country and further micro-zoned to Nasarawa State, Senator Abdullahi Adamu from Nasarawa State was elected National Chairman of the party for a term of four years. This was done based on the ratification of the zoning arrangement by the National Convention to ensure an even geographical spread of the executive positions of the party to accommodate the interests of the members and all the geographical zones in the country.

“However, on the 3rd day of August, 2023, after the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National chairman of the party just barely two years into his tenure, the party in violation of Article 31.5 (i) and (iv) of its Constitution 2022 (as amended) and contrary to the ratified zoning arrangement of the party zoning the National Chairmanship position to the North Central Geopolitical zone and particularly to Nasarawa State, surreptitiously appointed His Excellency Abdullahi Ganduje PhD from the North West Geopolitical Zone of the country.

“The appointment of His Excellency Abdullahi Ganduje PhD as the National Chairman of the party was greeted with deep seated resentment and disappointment by members of the party, particularly in the North Central Geopolitical Zone and other organs of the party. It must be noted that the said appointment completely violated the provisions of the APC Constitution 2022 (as amended), eradicated the principle of internal democracy which the party protects jealously and jettisoned the zoning arrangement thereby bringing the party to disrepute and further deepened the rancour, distrust and divisions amongst millions of its members, thus, affecting the chances of the party winning any elections in the North Central Geopolitical Zone and the country at large.

“This is aside from the fact that His Excellency Abdullahi Ganduje PhD is standing trial at the High Court of Justice of Kano State on allegations bordering on corruption.

“In light of the above, I call for the immediate resignation of His Excellency Abdullahi Ganduje PhD as the National Chairman of our great party. This is to afford the party the opportunity to imbibe the doctrine of internal democracy as guaranteed by the party constitution and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, uphold all zoning agreements reached by the party in order to foster unity and commitment of members thereby brightening the chances of the party winning future elections in the North Central Geopolitical Zone of the country.

“In the alternative, I humbly request His Excellency Abdullahi Ganduje PhD to step aside as National Chairman of the party and allow for the appointment of a Fact-finding committee to examine the matter in line with Article 21.3 of the APC Constitution 2022.

“Take notice that failure to adhere to the options stated above within 7 days of your receipt of this letter, leaves me with no option but to invoke the full amplitude of the law. This I shall do without reverting back to you.”

Zazzaga also copied President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Speaker House of Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, the National Working Committee of the APC and the National Advisory Council of the APC.

Recall that the North Central APC forum had earlier dragged Ganduje to the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking his removal as the National Chairman, but the court struck out the case giving some reasons.

Nonetheless, the North Central APC and the various party chieftains from the region have vowed to fight on until they get back the position, as well as other rights that is constitutionally theirs.

Nonetheless, the North Central APC and the various party chieftains from the region have vowed to fight on until they get back the position, as well as other rights that is constitutionally theirs.
